What is Sustainable Procurement?

Sustainable Procurement (SP) is defined as “practices that integrate requirements, specifications and criteria that are compatible and in favour of the protection of the environment, of social progress and in support of economic development, namely by seeking resource efficiency, improving the quality of products and services, and ultimately optimizing costs”.  (United Nations)

Statement on Sustainable Purchasing and Social Procurement

As procurement professionals, what and how we buy has an impact on the community and environment where we purchase our goods and services. In response to the UN Sustainable Development Goals, OUPPMA recognizes that sustainable and social considerations are significant criteria in the determination of best value in our purchasing activities.

While member institutions may pursue these outcomes differently, OUPPMA and its members affirm the general principles set forth by the UN Sustainability goals.
